The Worthy Pursuit

We are far too easily pleased, Lord.
We run after our toys with such vigor.
We pursue every form of recreation,
as if it could somehow save us.
   We involve ourselves in relationship after relationship,
hoping that each new conquest will give us full satisfaction.
   We work and work, earning more and more money,
thinking that somehow happiness can be bought,
or that the joy of the future can be mortgaged today.
We multiply the object of our amusement
and the means of our entertainment,
believing that if we can only turn off our minds for a few hours,
our true situation will disappear into the background.
Yes, we are far too easily pleased with all we can do for ourselves.
   But how much energy would we exert
toward obtaining our true Home
if we could only see the place you've prepared for us?
Give us that vision, God, and the determination
to reach for your promises every day.

God's plans, like lilies, pure and white, unfold;

We must not tear the close-shut leaves apart;

Time will reveal the chalices of gold.
